Zonda Tec Ghana Limited, a leader in the assembling, sale and rental of heavy and light-duty trucks in Ghana organized a road safety training program for truck drivers at its training center at Tema on Saturday 11, September 2021.
The event was attended by resources persons from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the National Road Safety Authority, Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) and the Road Safety Association of Ghana.
The event was to educate truck drivers on the importance of vigilance on the road. It also sought to refresh participants’ knowledge on road safety regulations and adherence to road safety practice, thereby reducing the increasing menace of road accidents in Ghana.
The Managing Director of Zonda Tec Ghana Ltd, Madam Yang Yang, in her address urged the participant to be careful on the road and strictly abide by road safety regulations. She said the current road accidents statistics were appalling as many lives are lost because of lack of adherence by drivers on the road. She added that Zonda cared about its drivers and all heavy-duty drivers hence the company’s commitment to contribute to the campaign on road safety.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Daniel Adjei Amoah, a Techinical Advisor from the Tema branch of DVAL said road safety should not be an after thought but should start from the moment a driver holds the steering wheel, adding that experience should be a major factor before they acquire the F License required for heavy-duty truck drivers.
“Drivers should not rush to acquire the F License, they should be patient and focus on experience and go through the right processes before securing an F License. Some of them use dubious channels to acquire F License and I believe that practice should stop.
Mr. Prince Ayim from the National Road Safety Authority in his presentation urged the participants, mostly truck drivers to be vigilant on the road. Presenting statistics from the first half of 2021, Mr. Ayim said more than 1,700 victims have died as a result of road accidents of up to 9,520 motor crashes involving 16,226 vehicles between January and July this year.
The participants, after a question and answer session expressed appreciation to the resource persons for the presentation and updates on road safety regulations. They encouraged that more of such events should be organized to consistently keep them updated and vigilant on the road. They also expressed gratitude to Zonda Tech Ghana Limited for taking the initiative to organize the event and hoped that invitation will be extended to them in subsequent events.
